Would Jesus Wear A Rolex?

by Archbishop Robert J. Guffey of Texas

I was listening to a country song by Ray Stevens called "Would Jesus Wear A Rolex?" This got me to thinking and I wondered what would happen if Jesus came to earth today? Would he go on the television and wear designer clothes and ask the poor people to send him money? Would he say that unless you send him one million dollars God was going to destroy him? I think this poses an ethical question among the ministers of the world.

To be sure there are more than a fair share of people who claim to speak for The Creator, but at the same time wear fancy clothes, get up and preach about how God spoke to them last night and told them to raise money for this or that. They preach the only way to salvation is to send them money and then they turn around and purchase a new car or a diamond ring.

Or perhaps they ask for money to feed the starving children of another nation. I wonder if Jesus were to appear who he would work with? Would he go to the President of the United States, or perhaps he could go to Congress and tell them what he had in mind.

I believe that if Jesus came to earth and were to say the things he said in the days when he was on earth if perhaps he might be laughed at.

I believe that if Jesus were to come to earth today we might see him working among the street people or perhaps, you might see him working in among the Prostitutes and working among the drug addicts or perhaps he might be seen having lunch with a prostitute, or maybe he would be serving lunch in one of the places set up to feed the hungry.

I can't believe that anyone who has read of the things Jesus did on earth would believe that he would wear a Rolex and designer clothes and ask the poor people to send him $20.00 so he could feed the hungry or clothe the poor all the while wearing a $10,000.00 Rolex watch on his arm. So I am posing the question would Jesus wear a Rolex and designer clothes or do you think he would wear perhaps a tee shirt and jeans and be comfortable?
